A short history of gravity

2013: THE IDEA WAS BORN

After a frustrating experience of contacting & co-ordinating so many different service providers for a university student event, Dave wondered why there wasn’t an easier way. With this in mind, the concept of an all-in-one events solution was born. Three years into a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery at Otago University he decided to take a ‘gap year’ and turn this concept into a reality. With a big vision and a pile of second hand speakers & party lights stored in Dave’s student flat, Gravity began to come to life.

Dave & Erin Isaacs Gravity Events

2014: erin joins the team

At the start of 2014, Dave’s flatmate brought his cousin over to visit: Meet Erin! After hearing that Erin was moving to Dunedin to study photography, Dave gave a rapid fire introduction to the concept of ‘Gravity Sounds’ and Erin joined the team. Thrown in the deep end with little real experience in photography, she quickly learned the ropes alongside Gravity’s first photographer Ben. Meanwhile, Dave & Erin became great friends…

2015: a year of change

2015 was a year of big changes! Dave & Erin got married, rebranded the business to ‘Gravity Events’ and founded sister company, Acorn Photography & Cinema. As a newly married couple they moved into a small house with a garage which became the living breathing Gravity HQ v1.0. They bought their first ‘Gravity Cube’ inflatable marquee and added DJ’s & Photo Booths to the mix of services.

2015: signal sounds & dj dan acquired

In 2015 they also purchased Christchurch-based DJ Dan Entertainment Services and Dunedin-based Signal Sounds, merging them with Gravity and bringing on a huge range of new equipment, clients and venues. They were beginning to outgrow their small workshop so it was time to look for somewhere new!

2016: Gravity workshop 2.0

A workshop in South Dunedin became the new home for Gravity Events. Dave and Erin assembled a great team and Gravity continued to broaden in being the ultimate all in one events solution. Offering a huge range of in-house services and a passion for working with people, word got out that Gravity was your one stop shop when you wanted to create an outstanding event.

january 2018: proevent joins the family

Dave and Ian Chalmers got together to talk about the future of their businesses. Ian had a lifetime of experience in the AV industry and was known & loved by clients in A&P clubs and community events in Dunedin, Mosgiel & beyond. They hatched a deal and in January 2018 they joined forces. The combination of new equipment, Ian’s decades of experience and Dave’s passion was a recipe for success with the combined business doubling in size in just 12 months.

2018: Dream it.

Bursting at the seams in their workshop in South Dunedin. an empty car painting building on Vogel Street Dunedin looked super appealing to Dave & Erin. They were looking for space to breathe and grow Gravity into the potential it had; they took the leap and moved the company. Fitting out the space to suit the Gravity life has definitely been one of the best decisions they made.

2019: new toys

After they finished building the new HQ their focus shifted. They began to invest a small fortune in the latest & greatest gear. 2019 saw them buy everything from a new RCF Line Array & 80 moving Head lights to super bright projectors, a high resolution LED Screen and a 40ft shipping container filled to the brim with brand new road cases (the arrival date is now known affectionately as ‘Container Day’ in the Gravity calendar).

They are now armed with everything they need to take on larger events and bring out of the box creative concepts to life.

2021: The now

Gravity strives to have their clients best interests at heart so you can rest assured that they guarantee a professional, reliable and stress-free service. Dave, Erin and the team look forward to discussing how they can help with your upcoming event.
